DICOM Modality Worklist is a service through which an imaging modality (e.g., CT scanner, MRI, X-ray equipment) can automatically receive patient and exam data from a Radiology Information System (RIS) or Hospital Information System (HIS).
It is standardized by the DICOM standard (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) to provide compatibility between various vendors and systems.

⚙️ How it works
The RIS/HIS stores the exam schedule information — patient name, ID, study type, referring physician, etc.
The modality (scanner) requests the worklist server via the DICOM MWL protocol.
Server sends a list of scheduled patients/exams back.
Technologist chooses the appropriate patient/study from the list.
Modality automatically fills in patient demographics and study information — no typing at all.
Important Information Exchanged through MWL
Patient Name, ID, Date of Birth, Sex
Accession Number
Name of Referring Physician
Study Description, Study Date/Time
Scheduled Procedure Step ID and Description
Performing Physician Name
Benefits
✅ Automates manual data entry – minimizes errors and saves time
✅ Maintains data consistency – across RIS/HIS, PACS, and modality
✅ Enhances workflow efficiency – technicians spend less time typing
✅ Identifies studies correctly – ensures that images are linked to the correct patient
✅ Facilitates audit and traceability – because all identifiers are consistent with hospital records
Traditional Workflow Example
A radiologist orders a CT scan in the RIS.
The patient comes to the CT room.
The CT scanner requests from the MWL server.
The patient’s booked exam pops up on the console of the scanner.
The technologist chooses the patient — all information populates automatically.
